Anna Szczepanowski

Anna SzczepanowskiWorking at The Old Bull and Bush has been a real eye opener for me, I never realised how much work went into running a restaurant. At first it was a bit daunting, but we received a week full of training, which really helped me out. It was also a really good opportunity to make friends with the rest of the team and got rid of all those awkward moments where no one knows each other.

Working at the Bull and Bush is great everyone is really friendly and we are only twenty minutes from central London so we can all go out together, sightseeing or for some retail therapy. I live above the pub which is so easy, not having to worry about rent and tax, it’s all sorted with one payment each week to company. I came from Australia to England to earn some money and go travelling in Europe which I still intend to do, but I will be sad to say goodbye to Old Bull and Bush and all the new friends I have made.

I joined the Merlin in November 2005 as they were a young and vibrant team who made me feel comfortable about re-entering the licensed retail industry. Starting as a team member in the North West, the team were dynamic and fully encouraged me to develop into a Team Leader and then Assistant Manager within 6 months. Life at work is fun, while still being hard work, every day is different with a variety of customers and I know this is where I want to be.

Working for this group has been ideal for me as a traveller. I have been able to save money by living on my tips, which are great because the service training is excellent. I have worked at the Cock Inn which was the first ever site in Birmingham for a year, then moved to Liverpool to the Devon Doorway for the opening. I will be moving back to Birmingham to experience another exciting opening. The management are very approachable, and the team work has been incredible. I have made wonderful friends from all over the world and I am proud to work in a place that provides delicious food, quality service and high standards.

I have been with this group for 1 year and am working my way into management, which is great experience for me before I return home to study Hotel & Tourism. It’s been a great year and living and working here makes it feel like we are one big family. The customers are great fun and have become regulars, it’s hard work, but I really enjoy it.
